Timeless Walls of Palakkad

Palakkad Fort, also known as Kannapuram Fort or Kottayi Fort, is a historical fort located in Palakkad, Kerala, India. It is one of the best-preserved forts in Kerala and offers a glimpse into the region's rich history and the strategic importance of the fortifications in the past.  The fort was originally built in 1766 by Hyder Ali , the Sultan of Mysore, as part of his efforts to strengthen his control over the region. It was built to serve as a strategic military base, guarding the route between Kerala and Tamil Nadu and protecting the southern boundaries of his empire.  After the death of Hyder Ali, his son Tipu Sultan continued to rule the region. The fort remained under Mysorean control until the British East India Company defeated Tipu Sultan in the late 18th century. Following this, the British took control of Palakkad.  Located in the heart of Tamil Nadu, India, the Brihadeeswara Temple, or Periya Kovil, stands as a monumental testament to the brilliance of Dravidian architecture, art, and spirituality. As I walked through its grand gates, I was immediately struck by its timeless beauty.  The towering gopurams (gateway towers) loomed above me, and the expansive courtyards seemed to stretch on forever. The main sanctum, dedicated to Lord Shiva, was crowned by a massive dome or "Shikhara," one of the largest in the world. I stood there, gazing at the towering Vimana—the central structure above the sanctum—that rose 66 meters into the sky. It felt like I was standing beneath a monument of unmatched grandeur. As I walked through the temple, surrounded by stunning sculptures that seemed to tell stories of gods, goddesses, and mythical creatures.
